In remote towns, regional hospitals, Aboriginal communities, disability organisations, sporting clubs, volunteer groups and local businesses across Australia, there are countless people dedicating their lives to improving the lives of others. Yet many of their stories remain unheard. Their challenges unseen. Their ideas disconnected from the people who could help bring them to life.
The Great Australian Give Back Expedition exists to change that.
Not by arriving with all the answers. But by arriving with curiosity.
This expedition is built on one simple philosophy: Listen first. Learn first. Respect first.
Rather than telling communities what they need, we ask:

- — If someone could help, what would that look like?
These conversations become the foundation of something much larger than a single expedition.

Throughout our journey we will invite people from every walk of life to travel with us. This expedition is not built for one profession, one sector, or one type of person. It is built for Australians who give a damn.

There are no lecture theatres. No name tags. No corporate speeches. No PowerPoint presentations.
Every day on this expedition is different. Every night is different. That is the point.
Because genuine relationships are not built inside boardrooms. They are built through shared experiences. The conversations that happen while floating in a hidden swimming hole, or passing a plate around a fire under a billion stars, or sitting quietly watching the sun drop behind red gorge walls — those are the conversations that change things.
You will come home with friendships you did not expect. Partnerships you did not plan for. And a sense of purpose that does not fade when the expedition ends.
What Does a Day Actually Look Like?
Honestly? No two days are the same. And that is exactly how it should be.
Some mornings we wake before sunrise and watch the light hit the gorge walls in colours you cannot photograph properly. Some afternoons we pull up beside a hidden waterhole that does not appear on any tourist map and spend two hours swimming in water so clear it does not look real.
Some nights we fire up the camp kitchen and cook something extraordinary using local produce sourced that day — proper food, real flavour, eaten under open sky. Some nights we are guests at an outback station, sharing a meal with the people who actually live and work this land. Some nights we sit down to fine dining at El Questro or a luxury wilderness lodge, because this expedition does not apologise for doing things properly when the moment calls for it. And some nights we roll into a small country town, eat at the local bakery or pub, and spend money there deliberately — because supporting those businesses is part of what this expedition is about.
If we are lucky — and we intend to be — there will be evenings where we are invited to sit with Aboriginal communities, share their fire, hear their stories, and experience something that most Australians never will. Those moments cannot be scheduled. They happen because of respect, relationship, and genuine curiosity. We will be ready for them when they come.

The Great Australian Give Back Expedition is also a celebration — of everything that makes this country extraordinary.
Ancient Aboriginal culture. Regional communities. National parks. Outback stations. Local cafés. Small businesses. Community events. Hidden waterfalls. Remote beaches. Country pubs.
Every kilometre is a reminder of what we are working to protect and invest in.
Aboriginal Australia Has Stories the World Needs to Hear
Where appropriate and by invitation, we hope to spend time learning from Traditional Owners and Elders, supporting Aboriginal-owned tourism businesses, listening to local perspectives, and sharing their stories respectfully.
This is not about speaking for communities. It is about creating opportunities for communities to speak for themselves.
When the Expedition Ends, the Work Begins
At the end of each expedition, our journey does not finish. It begins.
The ideas, challenges, opportunities, and community priorities gathered throughout Australia will help guide the work of the Great Australian Give Back Foundation.
The Foundation will seek partnerships, sponsorships, and philanthropic support to help communities pursue the projects they identify as meaningful — whether that is improving local facilities, supporting young people, strengthening health services, creating employment opportunities, or preserving cultural heritage.
We do not decide what communities need. We help connect communities with people and organisations who want to contribute.
You Won’t Just Join an Expedition. You’ll Join a Movement.
Participants don’t simply travel with us. They become part of a national network of people committed to leaving Australia better than they found it.
Some will contribute professional expertise. Some will offer mentorship. Some will provide funding. Some will volunteer. Some will simply listen.

The Great Australian Give Back Expedition follows the Northern Horizons route — Great Southern Expeditions’ flagship journey from Darwin to Perth through the heart of remote and regional Australia.
This is not just a meaningful expedition. It is also the very first time this route has ever been run commercially. Give Back participants are not just giving their time — they are making history as the founding travellers on one of Australia’s most extraordinary private expedition routes.

Why early April?
We have chosen early April deliberately. By this time the wet season has ended, cyclone risk has passed, roads across the Kimberley and Top End have reopened, and we have the best possible access to every part of the route. The landscape is green and alive from the wet season rains. The light is extraordinary. The timing is not an accident — it is the result of careful planning to ensure every participant gets the full experience with no compromises.
Give Back participants experience the Northern Horizons route first — before it opens to the public. You are not just giving back to Australia. You are part of the founding story of Great Southern Expeditions.

How this expedition comes together
The Great Australian Give Back Expedition is not a pre-packaged tour. It is something better — a collective journey built by the people who join it.
Great Southern Expeditions is contributing time, expertise, logistical planning, hosting, catering and expedition design at no profit. That is our give back. That is what we bring to the table.
Once expressions of interest are received and we have a clearer picture of who is coming and what the group looks like, we will get to work. We will begin approaching accommodation providers, logistics partners, and potential sponsors to negotiate the best possible deals for everyone involved.
The goal is simple: build the strongest, most economical package possible as a collective. If some participants can contribute a little more, that may help make it possible for others who have a little less. We look after each other. That is the spirit of this expedition.
We also understand that life has commitments. Not everyone can join us for the full journey — and that is completely fine. Participants are warmly welcome to express interest in joining us for any part of the route, for as long as they are able. Whether that is three days in Kakadu, a week through the Kimberley, or the final stretch into Perth — tell us where you would love to be and we will do everything we can to accommodate you. No guarantees, but every expression of interest will be considered personally and genuinely.
