Northern Horizons carries you through the warm north and down the wild western edge of Australia on a private expedition created for one travelling party alone. From tropical Darwin through Kakadu, Katherine and the vast Kimberley, the journey unfolds to Broome, then follows the Indian Ocean south along the Coral Coast, through Perth and on to Bunbury.

No early start, no schedule pressed on you. You land into the tropics and let the pace fall away — a long dinner as the sun drops into the Arafura Sea, the slow understanding that the days ahead are entirely yours. Give the north room to breathe: a couple of unhurried days in Litchfield, swimming beneath the falls and floating the tiered rock pools of Buley. A day is never enough here.

Nearly twenty thousand square kilometres of floodplain, escarpment and stone — one of the few places on earth World Heritage-listed for both its nature and its culture. You move gently through it: the rock-art galleries of Ubirr and Nourlangie, tens of thousands of years deep; a dawn over Yellow Water as the birdlife lifts off the wetland; cultural time with the Traditional Owners whose story this is. Everything arranged before you arrive. You simply witness it.

Between the great chapters, a place to simply be. Palm-fringed thermal pools the temperature of a warm bath, where you float through crystal water beneath the paperbarks and feel the last of the world let go of you. No itinerary here. Only stillness, and the sound of the water.

Thirteen gorges carved in ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, best met from the water at first light or from the air. Cruise between the walls, drift a quiet stretch by canoe, or lift off by helicopter over country no road reaches. This is Jawoyn land, and the welcome comes from its people. You sleep at the mouth of the gorge, in the finest room in the region.

West now, into the last true frontier. A soft landing at Kununurra, and the vast mirror of Lake Argyle — an inland sea held in red rock, a sunset cruise you will not forget. Boab country, wide and ancient, the Kimberley opening ahead of you.

A million-acre wilderness station on the edge of the Gibb River Road. You swim in thermal springs, walk the palm-lined chasm of Emma Gorge, and take in the boab country from the air. A scenic flight lifts you over the tiger-striped domes of Purnululu — the Bungle Bungle Range, World Heritage-listed and unlike anywhere else on earth. Heli-picnics, gorge landings and cultural walks are yours to choose or decline.

The Kimberley meets the Indian Ocean at Broome — pearling town, red pindan cliffs, and the twenty-two kilometres of white sand that is Cable Beach. The pace softens: a swim, a spa afternoon, a camel silhouette against the most famous sunset in the north, a dinner of pearl-meat and just-landed seafood.

Between the Kimberley and the coral coast, a pause few ever make. The tide pulls back over the horizon and the shells run for kilometres. Nothing to do but walk, and watch, and let the sheer scale of it settle in.

Here the reef comes to the beach. You step off the sand into a World Heritage marine wilderness of turtles, rays and, in season, the whale sharks and humpbacks that make this the greatest swim on the planet. By night, an eco-luxury camp on the dunes, the reef breathing just beyond your tent.

Another World Heritage bay, where the wild dolphins come to the shallows at dawn and the seagrass meadows shelter dugong and turtle. Red earth meeting the whitest water you have ever seen. You don't chase the wild here. You wait, and it comes to you.

The journey closes gently — the vineyards, forests and surf of Margaret River within reach, long lunches among the cellar doors — before Perth, the Swan River and a final night of true city luxury. A month behind you, and a continent that will never look the same again.
